Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic:

Dr JB has a particular love for the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic (LCPC) in Lancaster, PA. Since 1938, this non-profit organization has served the healthcare needs of individuals with cleft lip/palate and other craniofacial differences from infancy through adulthood.

Their committed team provides all dental, audiological, and speech needs for medically and behaviorally complex children. Their team includes plastic surgeons, ENTs, audiologists, speech pathologists, feeding specialists, pediatric specialists, dentists, orthodontists, and social workers.

Cleft treatment in the United States starts at birth and can continue through early adulthood, costing close to  $400,000. Children with a cleft qualify for state insurance, but unfortunately reimbursements do not cover the actual cost of treatment. The LCPC relies on generous donors, along with state and federal funding to make up the difference. It is part of LCPC's mission to provide care to all patients, regardless of their ability to pay.

Dr JB worked as an intern at the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic during the summers while he was in college. Then, he returned to help with a research project which ultimately became his published master's thesis during his postgraduate studies.
